British jazz-rock group formed in the late 1970s by improvising pianist Veryan Weston. He started the group while on a fellowship with the Digswell Arts Trust in Hertfordshire, where he worked with saxophonist Lol Coxhill. Other members were guitarist Gary Peters, Cliff Venner (drums), saxophonist Simon Picard and electric bassist Dan Brown. The band's name originated from some fresh winkles bought by Coxhill in Southend-on-Sea and left in his van.
