He was born in Mudhanai, a small village in Vridhachalam in Cuddalore district. Agriculture was the main activity of the village, and his parents were poor agricultural labourers. Folksongs had always fascinated Velmurugan since his boyhood. Singing was the second nature of the village folks and no occasion was complete without songs. Be it a village festival, agricultural activities such as transplanting, weeding, harvesting, etc, or a funeral, there was no dearth of songs. Whenever he heard songs, Velmurugan used to sing along with them.
