The Music Revelation Ensemble was one of the earliest free-funk bands, inspired by and building upon the ideas of Ornette Coleman's Prime Time. The leader and only permanent member was guitarist James "Blood" Ulmer, who wrote the majority of the band's material. The bands shifting lineup included: Ronald Shannon Jackson, Grant Calvin Weston, Jamaladeen Tacuma, David Murray and Hamiett Bluiett.
